Because everything is connected

Alexandria is a powerful database with interconnected tables for substances, bottles, test samples and experiments. With it, you can keep perfect track of all aspects of your experimental research. You can file all the substances you ever worked with, link each entry to every bottle you ever had of that particular compound. Each bottle entry has fields for entering purity, synthesis date, source etc., so you can keep track of which the good and the bad batches were. When you need to edit information for the substance in general, you do this in the substance table instead. Thanks to the dynamic linkage, all your bottle entries are updated automatically.

The same philosophy holds for all other parts of the database. When you take a small amount from a bottle and load into a test sample, you create a record in the test sample database. This is of course linked to its source bottle and, via that, to the substance that you actually have in the sample. When you perform an experiment on the sample, you link the test sample record to a new experiment record, and so on. If you work with mixtures, the substance record for the mixture links to all its components and the bottle record links to the actual bottles which you used for preparing the mixture.

The screen shots here give you an impression of how it can all work. The power of Alexandria is that you have instant access to all of your research work, over many years, just a few mouse clicks away. You get an unsurpassed overview of your work at the same time as you can easily find all the details. You can perform search with keywords all over the database. For instance, you can easily look up how you did that experiment many months ago, which you now have to describe correctly for the paper you are writing. No more looking through notebook after notebook just to find that the one in which you actually wrote down the information was lost when you moved from one lab to another...

Alexandria is still very much under development and no release date has been set. The price will be such that also students can afford a copy. Special group rates will also be available.
